Syphilis of the heart can be divided into two distinct groups. In the first, there is diffuse inflammatory reaction with interstitial connective tissue proliferation and fibrosis; this was described by Warthin (1925) as syphilitic myocarditis. He claimed to have demonstrated Treponema -pallidum in such lesions. However, many others working on the same subject have not succeeded in demonstrating the organism.
